The suite currently includes guides covering cycling, snooker, golf, boccia and table tennis. Each guide is accompanied by a dedicated e-learning module, delivered digitally and on-demand, which takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Through the modules, learners gain an introduction to the therapeutic value of individual sports, explore practical examples of adaptation and inclusion, and develop a greater understanding of how being active can support health and wellbeing outcomes. Upon finishing the course, learners receive a certificate of completion, CPD evidence and download access to the relevant guide.

Developed by Sport for Confidence in partnership with each sport’s official National Governing Body and a range of carefully selected community, health and sport organisations, the guides combine research evidence, professional expertise and lived experience.

Primarily designed to support health and social care professionals, the resources highlight how sport can be used to address barriers to participation, foster a sense of belonging and create opportunities for people to engage more confidently in community life. Each guide provides practical insight into how activities can be modified to support individuals living with disabilities, long-term health conditions or other challenges that may affect access to physical activity and community spaces.

Liz Fletcher, Occupational Therapist and National Lead at Sport for Confidence, said: ” Every day at Sport for Confidence we see how meaningful physical activity can support health, wellbeing and participation in everyday life. Alongside the physical benefits, it can help people build confidence, strengthen relationships, develop skills and reconnect with the people, places and activities that matter to them.

“These guides bring together learning from practice, research and lived experience. They are designed to give health and social care professionals the confidence to use sport and physical activity as part of a personalised, strengths-based approach that supports people to live healthier, more connected and meaningful lives.”

Launched in 2025 and funded through the Essex County Council’s Public Health Accelerator Bid (#PHAB), the Learning Arena is a workforce development programme designed to help people in Essex live healthy lives and achieve their full potential.

The integration of the Therapeutic Value of Sport Guides for Healthcare Professionals series into the Learning Arena reflects Sport for Confidence’s ongoing commitment to reducing health inequalities and supporting professionals to harness the power of sport and physical activity as part of a holistic approach to health, wellbeing and community inclusion.
