Understanding the workforce that brings movement, sport, and exercise
to life in our communities.
Bringing Movement
to Life in our
Communities
The physical activity workforce is made up of the people and professionals who create opportunities for movement, sport and exercise across our communities.
From coaches and fitness instructors to leisure teams, volunteers and community activators, they play a vital role in helping people get active, improve their health and build social connections.
Our work is guided by the professional standards of CIMSPA (the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity), the UK’s professional body for the sport and physical activity sector.
This diverse workforce operates in leisure centres, community venues and healthcare settings. What unites them is a shared commitment to helping people move more, feel better and live well.

At SFC, we recognise the power of this workforce to create inclusive, welcoming environments where everyone can take part. By working alongside Occupational Therapists, coaches and leisure professionals help bridge the gap between health and physical activity, ensuring opportunities are accessible, supportive and person-centred.
We believe every member of the physical activity workforce can make a meaningful difference, not only to physical health, but to confidence, connection and overall wellbeing.
